When I was a kid, I always picked my own toys and games when I had any say in it. And kids do still love Pokemon, especially in Japan (where this stuff pervades the society to a much greater degree).
I think the issue with LGPE will be much more obvious - kids hate this infantile stuff. Back when we were children, we never saw Pokemon as something "for children" - it always had cool monsters, battles, hot-blooded music, and the spirit of competition against others and yourself. Gotta catch 'em all, and all that stuff. Kids respond to this well because that spirit is something we all had - it's something that drives you forward in your formative years. And Pokemon always retained this spirit, just look at Sun & Moon covers for example. Those two designs look cool as shit.
And now compare those to LGPE box art. As a kid, I would've never asked my parents to buy that. I mean, it looks like it's for babies. And, well, it is.
