I literally can't. Why Game Freak actively decided to get rid of overarching details that would have made the line cohesive thematically and visually is beyond me.
We could have had salamanders with their gills turning into wings, but that went out the window the moment Game Freak decided each stage needed to be a special snowflake.

The segmented body thing is for snakes/reptiles. Dratini and Dragonair are not snakes, they're supposed to be more like sea serpents. Dragonite is more of a traditional Dragon and has a more reptilian/draconian body.
More lines does not make for a better design.
