dumbing down subjective, for every kid that found the original games hard, another found them without much challenge. I will somewhat concede though, they do seem to be focusing more on story and adventure than challenge
Overpowered mascots, could be objectively bad, depends on how its handled, if you can continue with the story without them in your main party it doesnt affect the game in any way. If they are stuck in your party, it makes sense to have them boosted for the later game since they cant evolve. If that is the case I hope this change only affects the lets go universe and not the entire series
as for the changing up of mechanics. This is a pokemon go game, its a blending of the go mechanics which wouldnt work on their own on switch and the gen 1 story. Since Niantic had success using just gen 1 before they may be trying to replicate doing just gen 1 again, hard to say.
