>>36518931My thoughts:
1) They chose the wrong topic to cover about. Plain and simple. Detective Pikachu is niche as fuck; barely anyone in the Pokemon community cares for Detective Pikachu. How can they expect to bring supercasuals into theaters? Catching, training, and battling are the mainstays of Pokemon; why not make a movie on that. Pokemon GO is proof that these three pillars can appeal to the mainstream audience.
2) I don't like the photorealistic look for all of the Pokemon. Part of Pokemon's charm is that it takes place in a cartoony world. Seeing photorealistic Graveler, Machoke, and Meowth makes me hate these designs, and this is coming from a Pokemon fan. How many outsiders are going to like a photorealistic Pokemon when they've always known about the cartoon designs? Honestly they should have went with something like the Super Bowl trailer. It got 24 million views on social media for a reason.
3) I am not a fan of the actor or the directors. The director doesn't have any noteworthy films or accreditation, so it is likely that Detective Pikachu is going to be poorly directed. The actors are also unknowns and don't have any appeal in convincing mainstream audiences to watch them. When I saw the awkward and horrible attempt at Worlds for these actors to record dialogue from an uninspired audience, any last hope I had for this movie went down the shitter.
4) The only redeeming part of this movie is the amount of references and cameos that went into it. Many of those will be overlooked by a mainstream audience, but the hardcore fans will appreciate them. Unfortunately, they haven't done an adequate job showing off these Easter eggs and references. Would have been nice to see a bit more going on here.
I am not going to watch this movie in theaters. When DP doesn't even make 20 million box office, I won't be surprised.
