the game has a huge variety of pokemon available before the first gym, with staraptor, alakazam, and gyarados being the only ones that are exceptional in-game

The trick was waiting until the end of Eterna Forest for the Soothe Bell, then going back and catching one of the lowest leveled Budews north of Jubilife to take advantage of all the boosted level up happiness increases. Doing this usually allows Budew to evolve before level 25 so you don't miss on Giga Drain.

Or alternatively just catching a Roselia.

Yes, it's great. Gen IV as a whole is awesome but personally Gen V is my favorite. Hopefully the remakes make them godlike.
