because your nostalgia glasses/default appreciation for "what came first" told you so. Pokemon has always been a very dry, generic, run of the mill product advertisement like the zillion other series out there ala Beyblades, He-Man, Medabots, Duel Masters, B-daman, etc.

Ivy and her assistants were shown to be real fucking slobs before Brock showed up. So considering that Brock didn't grow up with a mother at home, I think the most likely explanation was that, by living with women for a while, he realized that even them can be really disgusting if they don't care proper care of themselves. Not to mention their nasty mood swings.

The Pokemon anime for the first several seasons had a humongous budget and was handled by a company distinct from GF. It was a marketing show but sold the concept of the Pokemon world more than the games or merchandise themselves.
Early Pokemon is legitimately better and more watchable than any modern marketing show including modern Pokemon (which doesn't really sell anything except itself).
That said, I wouldn't put Pokemon up there with the genuinely amazing anime of its time period.

I just watched those early episodes of Pokemon and they are far from being dry, generic or run of the mill. Wouldn't call it incredible, but it definitely was enjoyable and distinct from what it is now.

She was a beautiful, smart and kind woman that had a career that meshed well with Brock's.
Brock had spent at least a few weeks living with her so his infatuation started turning into sincere love.
He finally decides that this girl is the one he wants to seriously spend his life with and proposes to her only to be rejected and quite possibly hit with the news that she's already married or engaged to someone else.
