but yeah, true story, I just figured that all my other pokemon I caught would be backups, but I never/rarely needed them. I mean, I had other pokemon in boxes, but I never used them, so I just stuck to my charizard, my dugtrio and my gyarados most of the time, and kept the other 3 slots free for whatever was in the area

I don't think Gen 1 Starmie learns any psychic moves naturally, imagine if they gave it Confusion early on or something. Any Bulbasaur/Oddish/Bellsprout plan would have been fucked.

Or you know. You could catch a Pikachu or Oddish or Bellsprout... Makes things a lot easier. Especially if you get Bellsprout. Just take it to Diglett's Cave and grind it up and you won't have any issue.

If you picked Bulbasaur you're golden. Starmie doesn't have any Psychic moves to fuck you up.

If you picked Squirtle just teach it Mega Punch, Mega Kick, or have it spam Bite if you're playing the remakes.

If you picked Charmander then use a different Pokemon to take on Starmie. It's not that hard.

This is the problem with Pokemon games. It's too easy to just overlevel and then destroy everything. They should auto-level pokemon to Lv. 50 for all trainer battles.

Not much of a tutorial when it encourages a play style that's ineffective for the "meat" of the game. Either way, I don't remember if gen I/II auto-levels for link battles, and gen III on didn't have the popularity for local multiplayer. Besides, if they're going to include a league, they might as well make it more interesting.

Sorry bubby, but that is incorrect. You can go to Bill's place, battle the Rocket for the Dig TM, go to Vermilion City, on to the SS. Anne AND go through Diglett's cave without beating Misty first. Granted you can't battle Surge, but that still give you plenty of time to raise an Oddish or Bellsprout to battle Misty.

I seriously think this would've been a huge wall if it had Confusion. On top of all Grass types being part Poison (including Beedrill if you were trying to be cheeky with Twinneedle vs. Starmie), chance to confuse could also fuck up Electric types. Then again there's always Abra.

So what you're saying is the first thing you should do when you get to Cerulean City is head straight into the gym and fight Misty? No don't go to the Nugget Bridge and fight your Rival. My favourite memory of Pokemon was watching a 3 year old accidentally beat Misty in Red after watching my 6 year old friend fail miserably at it. You can luck your way through anything. It's all part of the experience, what's the point if you don't have your own stories to tell?

It's okay. That Starmie only knows Water and Normal-type moves. This is only really a problem if you start out with Charmeleon; if you have Ivysaur and Wartortle, you should be okay. In LGPE, however, they recognize Starmie's true scariness and challenge by giving it Scald but at the same time lowered its Level to 19 to make it more manageable for the casual audience.

If they gave her Starmie a solid physical move Kadabra would be toast without some decent leveling. Also, Starmie is resistant to psychic moves. Even so, if the only good way of beating her without over training was to go to one specific patch of grass, catch a low encounter-rate mon, and then raise it several levels right after catching it, that would have been pretty ridiculous/ The TL;DR of this discussion is that Starmie is a bitch and GF really held back on how much they could have made it fuck your shit up as a child.

You could have a Nidorin@ by then that knows Horn Attack, a fucking Fearow, a god damned Weepinbell (which trounces Misty's team alone), a fucking GYARADOS, a god damned PARASECT (that LITERALLY hard counters her Starmie), a fucking Butterfree or Beedrill, pick your poison--oh and a chucklefucking Pikachu.

Starmie was only hard if you were a mong who kept in Charmeleon or Gravelers in play, and even then there's countless of other ways you can fucking delete her whole team, like using items in battle.

They were never "hardcore". The only "hardcore" anything was Battle Frontier, and that was less "hardcore" and more "literally cheating against you".

Paras is a good answer because it can paralyze it and outdamage it with Fury Swipes, but most of what you're proposing is just dumb. There are ways to make Misty easy without taking the retard-strength way out by grinding, like hitting it with paralysis. That doesn't change the fact that it's a hurdle for those who aren't prepared. Your faux-elitism is unwarranted.

Fuck this was worse. If I ever wanted to quit RBY, it was there. After beating Misty I couldn't beat Gary at the Nugget Bridge because his Pidgeotto was too fast/powerful and it consistently swept my team. And there was no place to train to level up because Mt. Moon was closed off after you left that area.
