I thought it was kinda cool how Sinnoh's shit-tier Fire distribution made Flint actually a half-decent challenge since most of his Pokémon were a variety of types.

Sure when I was 10 they were tough, seeing as I didn't know shit about stats, STAB, Phys/Spec moves, the usefulness of buffing and X-items. I replayed Diamond recently though, and I destroyed the first three members with Rock Polish/Wood Hammer/Stone Edge/Earthquake Torterra. Lucian got fucked by Rapidash and Weavile. A mix of other non shitmons dealt with Cynthia. In Platinum though, they were definitely the hardest I've seen.

Not Sinnoh in general, just Platinum, holy shit. I actually had to exp grind my team in Platinum just because they were all so overleveled. I remember getting to Lucian having burned all of my items and just getting straight swept by his Alakazam.

its that they actually tried to give them a good team of 5 pokemon each AND coverage or moves that made sense
instead of a team of 3 sealeos or 4 shitters from a small dex

I wouldn't say that. The entire Sinnoh Elite 4 at least all got exposure from appearing in the anime. And they benefit from being introduced in the era of strong characterization. The Hoenn Elite 4 is pretty forgettable but ORAS was recent so they're still in our collective memory. The Kalos Elite 4 is pretty forgettable, probably the single most forgettable one. The Johto Elite 4 is pretty forgettable too, even though it has a former gym leader; I guess Karen is somewhat memorable due to her dialogue, but Will is basically a noncharacter, and Bruno has very little focus despite being around since Gen 1.
