I dunno, maybe the older style looked better in stills than it did in motion because it seemed way too sterile and stiff to be visually pleasing, while sm doesn't have this problem
but I will not trust opinions from vp, because they're either not genuine or incredibly biased

The old artstyle was bad too. Compared to other monster stuff like Yu-Gi-Oh and Digimon, the Pokemon anime has generally been pretty boring to look at save for maybe a few choice battles.
