Actually yes, a HUGE chunk of the staff left after Kalos, many of which had been with the show since Kanto.

It's a technique that's supposed to save on time and resources by making all slice of life moments looks kinda janky and cartoony, so that when real shit goes down - you can spend your budget accordingly. Yoshihiko Umakoshi is famous for it, he did miracles for Ojamajo Doremi and Heartcatch Precure - both long-running TV shows that looked amazing thanks to his animation and design.
The problem is - you need a talented cartoonist like Umakoshi to pull this off. Otherwise, SM will happen.

Look up a list of the show's writers.
The show initially had 7 writers, Shudo, Tomioka, Sonoda, Takegami, Ohashi, Fujita and Yonemura. Aside from Shudo, who left because of health issues and later died, they all stuck with the show until Kalos. Tomioka and Yonemura were the only ones that didn't leave when SM started. SM is written by those two, Matsui (who has been around since AG), Omode (who has been around since BW) and a bunch of newcomers.

Shock horror, after 20 years writing for the same show, they leave to do other things. I do have to say however, that if it took them all leaving to make a paradigm shift in the show's premise, fucking good. I'm actually watching this season, which is more than I can say for anything past mid-way through Johto.

It's not that bad from a technical standpoint, but it looks way more like generic anime than it used to. Pokemon started out with a very distinct style, but starting with black and white, slowly began transitioning to the same style every other modern anime uses, where everyone looks like a stroke victim with a vaguely triangular sticker instead of a mouth

You can kinda tell from this thread that the vast majority of the people defending SM didn't actually like the show before SM, while the long-time viewers dislike it. That alone makes it pretty clear it was a mistake.
