If you don't want to deal with natures and all that other bloat then GSC is the way to go. But then again when you take HGSS's Pokeathlon, customizable Safari Zone, crossgen evos, etc. into consideration the pros outweigh the cons.

The Gen I and II remakes completely surpass the originals, they’re basically the same games with updated mechanics/graphics and new Pokemon/content. There’s no reason to play any Pokemon game pre-FRLG

HeartGold is the definitive Johto experience imo, it has basically everything from Crystal. I specifically say HeartGold just because Ho-Oh fits into the story better; Lugia being a post game also means you can delay the Whirl Islands as long as you want.

That's one of the main changes HGSS made that I don't like. In the originals it was completely optional to battle your mascot, but they made it mandatory in HGSS.
