See, Gastrodon was originally a gen 3 Pokemon. You'd find the brown rock-colored one on the land half of Hoenn, while the blue and green one was on the aquatic half. The idea was that one version adapted for land and one was adapted for sea. That's why it's a water/ground type.

No, but in Japanese -NG sometimes gets written as "n" and sometimes gets written as "ngu", so it could be a correct romanization if you really stretch. There's really no hard rule for lonewords in Japanese.

The Japanese syllabic nasal ん is pronounced as m, n, or ng depending on which sounds in the same word follow it. When ん precedes a k or g, it's pronounced ng. When ん precedes p or b, it's pronounced m. Preceding any other sounds, it's pronounced n.

Togashi's method looks crazy because it takes into account things that the others gloss over completely, like elision/devoicing, etymology, and more vowels than Japanese's basic aiueo.
