Which of the later remakes are worse in this regard? I haven't played HGSS yet but thought ORAS wasn't that bad, mostly 90 second chit-chats and you're back to playing.

the most known rpgs usually have a plot decent at worst, being interrupted every 10 seconds for shallow character interaction like you're a great trainer and dude malasadas lmao with the overarching plot just as badly written feels shitty. I didn't care much for xenoblade 2's characters at all and yet the constant cutscenes didn't feel that grueling, gf is just shit at writing

Of course. Can't play only pokemon forever, though it also means I don't come to /vp/ every day anymore.
Only other JRPG that comes to mind when I think of "overbearing tutorials" is Xenoblade 2. The first to third chapter, which is about 20-25 hours, are just tutorial chapters with all these popups telling you how to sell shit or turn the camera. There's even a tutorial 40 minutes before the end of the game. Fucking annoying. Most games seem to give you a quick overview of the mechanics then either let you learn through experience or give you optional more indepth tutorials somewhere.
Of course quick and dirty tutorials can be detrimental too, since I had no idea what I was doing in Tales of Berseria and just button mashed for the entire game, but Pokemon is pretty simple and doesn't need smartphone game-tier tutorials.

even in KH2 it doesn't handhold you after the literal 2 hour tutorial is over and you still have 96% of the game

A boss monster swooping down on you is not the same thing as Lillie jumping over a ledge and then explaining it to you, dipshit.

And even if it were, the fact that you can press two buttons to skip the boss monster swooping in on you still makes it better than Lillie jumping over a ledge and explaining it to you without the ability to skip it.

sun and moon was objectively the worst decision I've ever made with money. I haven't gotten through the first part because I have zero tolerance for the handholding and the fucking kindergartner tier dialogue. And holy shit is the music terrible.

Wow HGSS babies are really butthurt. Besides "muh walking bros" and "Pokemon Dash Simulator", those games were way slower than GSC. At least FRLG respect the original's speed and pacing for about 80% of the game (you can make the Sevii Islands story after the main story if you wish) and actually add postgame and tutorials as optionals without taking anything from the originals, and ORAS added actual content (over 20 megas, postgame, soaring, Dexnav) and did most characters better. HGSS's Battle Frontier and Walking Pokemon were a thing back in Platinum, and characters like Kimono Girls and Lyra/Ethan shit on you every two seconds just because "le forced friend" meme.
But hey! You still have that shitty level curve and other nice features! Enjoy waiting 100 days for a Gilbe!
