It's the equivalent of robbing a bank rather than working for the money.
You are not entitled to the recognition or the prizes involved in competitive play any more than you're entitled to them in the bank example so you don't get to dismiss the comparison that makes it the exact same thing.
In this case there is in general no one harmed by doing so. Do it with your friends all you want... Just don't think you're entitled to do so in play where you're stealing prizes from others and have agreed not to do it (which actually makes it worse in that regard - you didn't technically agree not to rob anyone the day you were born, after all but you are agreeing to the rules that exist when going online etc.).
