Notice that apologists of these kinds of nu-sequels (SW sequels, pokemon from SM onwards) never argue for the merits of their defendee, but attack the previous installments and say that they are crap/overrated/etc.. For example, you have people criticizing The Last Jedi for poor characterization, massive plot holes and shaky continuity/timeline, and what you get from the defenders is claims that Star Wars was always stupid, for kids, or just right away sinking to name-calling the opposition "nerds", "alt-right" or what have you. Or with SM and LPGE, with no justification at all for removing things like triple/rotation/horde battles and items/abilities, the apologists immediately turn to saying that these features were bad and unneeded anyway. It makes you think if they will also suddenly start hating something introduced in the newest games once it gets removed later, since their M.O. seems to be to brainlessly insist that the newest games are the best no matter what. So their logic revolves around making a mediocre product seem good by trying to claim that everything that came before is suddenly bad, and this is because their defendee has no actual merits to defend.
