They didn't need that for the past 22 years. Viridian Forest having bug types, Route 1 having Pidgey, and Brock having rock types means you were likely to have seen the "Super Effective" and "Not Very Effective Message" just in Gen 1.
Why do people seem to "forget" this when thinking about kids?

The reason they didnt include a "use this pokemon against these types" in gen 1 is because the manual had a type chart

you walk into the gym, read the sign and could then look at the manual and see "oh i have a water move, this will be easy" or not

and since gen 3/4 youve had the trainer school which gave you a basic run down of type effectiveness (compulsory in the most recent entries)

Id much rather catch one pokemon to show i understand than sit through 4-6 battles before i can advance the plot

assuming that aspect hasnt changed, kids are going to try and collect a bunch of different pokemon its not unreasonable to think they would have a grass or water type by then, especially with a bunch of grass types added to viridian forest

The reason why they didn’t need this, is because they TOLD you what move types were effective against the gym.
The difference is they didn’t force you to have a Pokémon of that type, they just let you know what to do.

2/3rds of the starter options were super effective

boo hoo you have to do 1 small thing to get entry to the gym. Are you going to complain about having to get cut to enter Surges gym? or the key from the burned mansion to get into Blanes? What about having to navigate the maze in Kogas?

The gyms have always had some kind of puzzle or entry condition. Stop being a little bitch about having to catch a pokemon, its not even like youd have to go out of your way, theyre running around the forest now just throw a pokeball and box it

There are likely no Fighting, Steel, or Ground-type Pokemon at this point in LGPE. Viridian Forest's encounter tables have been changed to include Butterfree/Beedrill, Oddish, and Bulbasaur. It is likely we won't see Mankey and co. until later. The gym guide telling you about Grass- and Water-types is their way of saying that a Pokemon, even with moves that are SE against a Gym Leader's, may not win against the Gym Leader unless they are also that type. Pikachu may have Double Kick, but it's not a Fighting-type.

This game can't be nuzlocked anyway due to the difference in how Pokemon are encountered now.

Brock's pokes are 4x weak to 2/3 Kanto starters. In Gen III, Charmander learns Metal Claw at level 15. Mankey is easy to get in Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen. Even in Gen I, Charmander could easily take on the first gym.

Brock was never hard.
