Not a fan of either of those Kanto maps. I always liked to imagine Kanto as a pretty urban place, the different "cities" just being different districts of one large city, especially around Safron.
This is of course only taking the game graphics and perhaps its real life equivalent into account, completely ignoring the anime or any other material.

That said, the original map is far better.

I agree as to Saffron, the routes to Cerulean and Vermilion felt like they weren't meant to very pronounced, Lavender Town more so because it's next to a mountain cave, but the west side has mountains and forests and Fuchsia is definitely meant to be out there.

Here is a better version. Still imperfect but much better than what's on Bulbapedia.

Also my favorite Kanto map. I love some cool details on it, for example that the canal on Route 10 looks like an artificial water body, built to cool down the Power Plant. Or how the Rest Houses in Safari Zone are still in despite it being closed (I guess they still planned to put it in at that point).

I think the main difference is that the ones on the right are meant to be used as navigational helpers, while the ones on the right are meant to be more of a lore-based interpretation. Notice how the ones on the right also offer a more areal view, looking more like a map than a picture. I prefer the left side more myself, as it's a lot more accurate to the landmass, but the ones on the right seem more like the kinds of maps people would actually use if they lived in these locations.
