Before it got significantly easier, how did you guys justify so much time spent breeding?
Especially going after good IVs. Even with Destiny Knot you still get 1 random IV.
So what was your deal? Was it simply autism?

I cant even be arsed to get a beneficial nature. As long as its not a bad nature for the stat I want. I take it.

I just cant get enough time to even do it when I was a neet. Recently I bought a 3rd DS and Im trying to get one pokemon with good stats between all of them.

I would usually breed 5-10 of the pokemon and pick the one with the best stat, nature, and ability. usually no further than that aside from interesting egg moves (hydro pump bagon, etc). I did not understand IVs.
I would also breed the pokemon I had used in previous runs to get my next set because I wanted them to have a superior bloodline

I didn't.
I refuse to believe anyone bred seriously prior to gen VI unless they somehow enjoyed the experience.
People complain about cheating now but it was much worse back then, on the actual on-cart competitive scene.

But people still butted heads at me when I claimed this even back then, cheaters are always going to be cheaters and play their mental gymnastics.
Not like it affected me personally though because the reason I didn't get into competitive was precisely the retarded breeding mechanics on top of people cheating, too much of a time commitment just to get shit on by people genning their teams in seconds and making large adjustments literally between matches, while you had to work for weeks to get a single team together.

At least now the disparity isn't as large, but it still exists. People who can't hack their system can at least get a hacked 6 IV Ditto from someone and breed really fast nowdays. It used to be such a bigger problem than it is today.

Oh yeah, RNG manipulation was much more popular.
But at that point in my opinion you might as well gen, your're manipulating data using reverse engineered methods to get the results you want in both methods, one is just faster and less autistic.
Back then I had like 2 full teams I worked my ass off to breed, and that was it. I loved those teams, beat PBR with one of them, and did OK online too (PBR online was peak Pokemon by the way), but keeping up with the meta was impossible without cheating in some way and at the time I felt genning just sucked all the spirit of the game right out of it, there's no point to having things when you can simply have everything, things lose their value.

Natures were honestly a mistake, and IVs need to fuck off. Any given Pokemon should at least have the potential to be as good as the species can be, not be permanently doomed to inferiority. Playing the egg roulette is the single worst thing in hardcore Pokemon, and the game would be better off for it if it wasn't so mandatory to have good Pokemon.

I usually just breed for moves, if you got the strategy down and you got a good moveset, usually being able to survive 1 extra hit with a miniscule amount of health isn't worth the effort
