Nintendo had a survey at the end of the waku-waku book, a short little kids activity book given out at stores. Once you complete it you can see the results. Most of them were about what game you played and stuff like that, but one neat questions was “tell me your favorite pokémon.”
Worth noting that over half the responses were from kids aged 5-9.
