Neither... they’re just species of animals they don’t really have any real connection or relationship to real animals. Some Pokémon designs are based on real animals but that doesn’t mean they’re any less of their own unique species.

They are essentially the Pokémon world's equivalent of animals. I ignore any reference to non-Pokémon animals because it really muddies things up (fuck off, Richard).
Plantoid, fungal, and inorganic Pokémon aren't animals.
