what happens to the pokemon when they're in the pokeball? are they still conscious? is it like sleeping or being in stasis?

I'm fairly sure they're conscious because Wobbafet always knows when to jump out on Team Rocket. So what, they clearly can't see anything but they can still hear? Imagine being trapped in that until your trainer decides you can momentarily have your freedom back. Seems horrible.
