pokemon is one of my favorite things in the world but even i wont deny that while other series like YW are trying new things that look hype as hell, pokemon is scared shitless to stray too far from their usual formula

I tried to get into YW and couldn't, the battle system is garbage and the monster designs make even the worst Pokemon look like masterpieces.
I fully admit the YW games have way more effort and are much better crafted than the latest Pokemon games, but that doesn't mean anything if I just don't like the core gameplay or the creatures.

I mean Digimon is pretty consistent after they spent their times with gimmicks, now you have Megas, Z-moves and special techniques (Albeit shittier Z-moves) and I'm willing to get Gen 8 will have one too. The thing is, Habu came, they've listened to their audience, something that might never happen to Pokemon because no matter the backlash it'll still sell more copies to make up for any fan losses.

The Yokai designs however, aside from the mascot and its clones, are not my genre, Jibuyan should be in Smash, decent Nintendo title in Japan, might advertise these games so that they start to sell oversea too and perhaps tease Game Freak and Nintendo to put some extra effort in the new Pokemon titles.
I'm still in favor of Pokemon classic battle style formats tho, turn based etc.

It's different for Nintendo who is at the mercy of neckbeards who don't think very highly of kawaii culture and shit on Windwaker and its design descendants. Miyamoto even went on record saying that Windwaker taught him a valuable lesson that the West prefers more conventional anime designs which Japan doesn't care for. This is why Nintendo is constantly trying to break the mold while GF doesn't care.

Idk if you noticed but the player character is also in the battle. That’s like if pokemon allowed you to control your trainer during battle and ouch your opponents pokemon in the face. I’ve never seen any monster collecting game do that

That's exactly why Yo-Kai Watch is dead now; Gen 6 was a stale rehash, while Yo-Kai Watch brought something new and unique to the monster genre

Then Gen 7 came and revitalized the Pokemon series so now YKW is irrelevant

Im sure this thread will be discussing the battle system, but the real shit that needs to evolve is everything outside of the battle system. The fucking formula of having linear routes where all ypu can do is walk, and fill the routes with dozens of pushover trainers that try and fight you with 3 caterpies is stupid. Im not necessarily saying open world, which is a meme, but even that would be a hige improvement.

Every trainer should be a miniboss. Reduce the amount of trainers but make the ones you come across actually challenging. Some are monotype, some use trick room, some use weather, make them unique and fun to fight. Instead of just getting battle items from stupid townspeople, have those as rewards for trainers. Make trainer battles consensual fights instead of them ambushing you on eyesight. You can approach Trainers and see a difficulty rating and come back later if it's too hard or if your team isn't suited. Since there are less trainers you can make them memorable, make some of them game long rivals or give them continuing quest lines.

So much fucking potential like an ACTUAL RPG instead of just some linear steamroll until you get to a gym leader

They've kind of been moving more in that direction as of SM. There are significantly less trainers, more roadblock fights than usual, and optional trainers who use strategies that you wouldn't normally see in-game. Hopefully, the next game goes all the way with it.

Not really. YW 1+2 are same combat. 2 adds things to 1, but it is the same. The additions made to 3 are probably the big change to the series.
The spin-offs do have different gameplay though, with blasters being instance-based action games and sangokushi being turn-based strategy

The question is how different should it be?, because if you go too far then you run the risk of alienating people because the game isn't what they are used to and love, just look at let's go removing items and abilities, and now tons of pokemon are shit because of that.
If you wanna go too far in changes it's better to try it on a spin off, like Pokken, which let's you have real time battles

I think it doesn't need to be different, it just needs to go deeper into what makes these games appealing in the first place.

Why is Following Pokemon such a glorified and requested feature that is objectively trivial? Players want to feel like they're exploring a world WITH their pet monster, which is what the premise of the entire series used to be about.

GF could have taken notice of this and taken it all the way with the next game, for example letting you have 3 monsters out at one time with actual utility, like one to ride on, one to scout ahead and identify wild mons in the area, and one to use HMs automatically

Instead they tossed out that beloved feature and ignored the fan response to it and added a bunch of trivial shit nobody asked for

GF is always one step forward, one and a half steps back
