I guess my problem with new games is that they simultaneously create new things while adding nothing at all. Like I love the idea of Ride Pager since now I don't have to deal with HM slaves. But there is nothing. Read NOTHING threatening about Alola sans one single monster and like 2 Totem battles. And i'm not saying this as a guy who played these games for 20 years. Just as a guy who plays a lot of video games. Old games had actual dungeons in them explicitly meant to punish the unprepared. It was a gauntlet of challenges where you had to find your way to the end and the wild pokemon and NPCs could chip away at your team until there was nothing left. Granted pokemon games are easy so the effect is diminished but the structure was sound, GF just needed to take their hands off the training wheels. In fact Viridian Forest is notorious for this since your pokemon is so low leveled that Weedle's poison is a potential death sentence if you didn't bring antidotes. The rest of the game just needed to be balanced around that difficulty. Alola doesn't even fucking bother. It's a straight line the whole way through with maybe one or two token block puzzles that don't even touch Victory Road or Seafoam Islands that rewarded you with an optional legendary for getting past multi storied block puzzles. Hey legendaries for exploration rather than getting lucky with Rick's portal gun imagine that?

The other thing is that exploration was way more organic. I mentioned that straight line right? Well that's mostly because you're artificially gated from other areas by arbitrary nonsense. Olivia won't let you pass Diglett cave because she really REALLY wants you to meet Lana and Mallow for some reason. You can't access the other hotel on Akana island because some asshole won't move his dog. Also literal fucking gates with a guy that won't let you pass until you take pictures of grown up orphans. Here's an example in gen 1. Once you make it to Lavender and Celadon you're gated by a wild pokemon that climbed down from the mountains and decided to take a nap in the middle of the road. It won't move and it will completely ignore your existence until it wakes. So what do you do? Well in Lavender there's talk of a guy who has a flute that can wake sleeping pokemon. But they never say "hey now you can wake a big pokemon that may be sleeping down south on a bridge next to 2 fishers." The game assumes you're not stupid and lets you put the pieces together yourself. And you're rewarded for it if you do because if your pokemon is sleep during battle then the pokeflute will wake it. You never have to buy an Awakening again.

Now I know i'm overselling a children's rpg from 1995 but I say that to say that as jank as those games were you were on an adventure. Not a guided tour. I'll always remember dickass Gary showing up unexpectedly far more than Cyrus summoning an interdimensional demon to recreate the world? What the fuck does that even mean, is he related to Kaecilius by chance?

Old was a good basis, middle was actually adding shit, new is not entirely but mostly removing everything to rush games out that suit people who don't play rather than the millions who do.

Put even more concisely, make a list of everything about Pokemon's gameplay that you will have plausibly experienced by the time you beat Brock. All that's left are, what, HMs and alternate evolution methods?

And the problem we end up having is that since the early games good design choices are ultimately not that difficult, we kind of overrate them in consistently bringing them up. They weren't super-meaningfully open-ended and the difficult parts were usually the E4 and one or two stop-game gym leaders (though who those are can vary by team comp so hey), but those were all good things!
