Sugimori can still draw nice scenes, the artwork you posted are absolutely great. When I said that the new art is static I was referring to the Pokémon official artwork: they don’t seem animate anymore, they are just posing. It seems that Sugimori knows that these monsters are now part of the biggest franchise on earth and he wants to show em in the clearest way, but it feels so innatural.
>>36582286There, Charizard isn’t the only one to move: Nidoking and Magnemite both are looking at the fire, Clefairy is using metronome, the smaller Pokémon are popping out of the tall grass. Farfetchd has its usual pose, but keep in mind that this official art was likely one of the first made, maybe Sugimori didn’t study other poses for it.
I still feel that old art has more heart, and it isn’t nostalgia, I’m not a genwunner. Just look at Sugimori’s art for the Gym expansions of the TCG, and compare them with his art from RS expansions and the following: the formers are cool and believable, with Pokémon in many different poses; the latter consist often in a plain background with the official art copy pasted on it.
I still love Sugimori’s art, but during the years he became more and more technical. I don’t know if it’s his choice or he follows orders from above.
