Because this is the best way to run damage control possible? If you have a technical fuck-up the best thing to do is try and turn it into an advantage.
GF normally does the opposite of this so it shows Niantic is more competently managed than GF

Not saying weird Pokemon don't have their place, but not as the mascot or hype generator of a new gen. Look at all the Pokemon that served as ambassadors for their respective gens:

Togepi appeared way earlier than Donphan - even Marill and Snubbul did, as they were in the short Pikachu movie.

Diancie wasn’t the first Gen 6 Pokémon to be revealed, it was indeed one of the latest following Hoopa and Volcanion.
Gen 6 is the only Gen that started with showing us the Starters trio.
You’re probably mistaking Diancie with Magearna, that was the first Gen 7 mon to appear.

Didn't Sylveon show up in a gen 5 movie? There was even Alexa who appeared alongside with her Helioptile and Gogoat in the BW series.
