Depends on the team, but probably gen 4 from an average standpoint.

For what it's worth, I've played every gen monotype bug and 3 was the hardest. Gen 3 was when the NPCs teams weren't laughably bad, but at the same time plenty of pokemon still had fuckawful level up movepools. Gen 4 may be harder, but at least that was the gen when almost every pokemon got a usable movepool

HGSS because the difficulty spike is fucking retarded.

The game is a breeze up until Claire who will bust your balls if you aren't careful. Then once you refight the Elite Four and Red, holy shit. I did not have a good time. And what makes things worse is that there is NOWHERE to grind in that game.

Platinum was my personal hardest. USUM had some difficult fights. I imagine there were a lot of kids who gave up at Ultra Necrozma, that thing will FUCK you up so fast. Weird how it seemed to up the difficulty so much from SM

I've ended up underleveled in both of the Gen 7 games, but maybe that was just me. I only had about two or three fights in each game that I had to do a second time. The only other time I can remember being challenged by a Pokémon game was the Cynthia fight.

I never played gen 7 with exp share on and wild poni island pokemon would be like 6 levels ahead of me. I have no idea how it's balanced with it on

Technically speaking HGSS or USM but this is more due to some moments where the player is underprepared due to level jumps and it going back and forth on diffculty. Platinum if tounwant constancy diffculty, the only real bullshit level jump is Fantina and you have some prep for most bosses and Cynthia had a competive at the time team

Black and White, Deffinintley. With the severe level curve and not much spaces to grind Black and White was the hardest gams to grind and therefore the hardest games.

They're mostly hard because pretty much every Pokémon has shit movepools in that game and leveling up mons takes ages.

No one who isn't retarded wants a straight up harder game all around. Optional difficulty is the thing to want.

Something Masuda also fails to realize and that's why we end up with shit like Trash Go. A game can target many audiences and make them all happy, you just need to take the time to provide the options to make it so.
