How 'bout Gym Leaders that specialize in differing strategies and stats rather than monotype?
Like evasion, status effects, sweeping, ect.

A rival that is explicitly on a Solo Run and only uses their Starter for the entire game, but their Pokémon is always 10-20 levels higher than everything else around you when you battle them.

Dude would probably be a motorcyclist or something, since he really likes speed 'n shit.

The team may look scary, but the moves never exceed 60 BP, and the lot of his team have easily found weaknesses.

I've always liked the idea of Rangers being more prominent in larger/sparsely populated regions. They could help ease the repetition with different subclasses, like environmental rescue, emergency response, or even dedicated battle Rangers for the lategame.
If they do a larger/more open game, they could also make it so the player can talk to Rangers to get a flight back to town if they don't have the move yet.
