>>36602061The few things they are keeping are mostly good things (HM not taking a move slot and following Pokemons), being able to see (and thus avoid) wild Pokemon is a good idea and allows you to shiny hunt without going to the battle screen every 10 seconds if done properly, and, if combined correctly with the traditional battle mechanics, the GO catching system could make the act of capturing Pokemon more engaging and rewarding for skilled players.
It still suffers from a cruel lack of content, mechanics, "difficulty" (read lack of hand-holding), and good graphics, but what is there is, from the looks of it, decent.
