Trevor should've been the Pokédex reward NPC that gives you stuff for seeing many Pokémon on your journey. Tierno should've been involved in contests, something that should've been in the game all along, and could teach your Pokémon moves of different styles to help you win contests and/or been a rival for them. Shauna should've been your breeding buddy, offering to trade and share different Pokémon across the game to breed stronger members into your team
and obviously being your breeding bitch.
