Literally every single Generation since the first has moved further and further away from reality.
Gen 1 = Named after a real location.
Gen 2 = Not named after a real location.
Gen 3 = Alters the geography of the location it's based on
Gen 4 = Stops referencing IRL locations altogether
Gen 5 = Stops trying to mimic IRL locations exactly, becomes a patchwork of inspirations so they have more creative freedom
Gen 6 = Rewrites the history of the Pokémon world so it explicitly doesn't match our own
Gen 7 = Retcons out mentions of real world locations
This isn't something that's only cropped up in the past couple of games, Game Freak has been trying to distinguish the Pokémon world as its own unique fantasy land since Gen 2. It's only been loosely inspired by real locations, history and legends, and trying to claim they all still slot together perfectly on a world map (especially when taking Unova into account) is benign.
