Define "generation".

How do you define "generation", /vp/?

A lot of people, including Serebii, defined it as "a group of new pokemon introduced all at once in a single game" and argued that "generation" never referred to the games, but rather the group of Pokémon. Other people argued that a new generation is also defined by other things, such as a new region, new story and such. This argument began in 2016, in response to everyone who suggested that Sun and Moon could have been a sort of B2W2 equivalent for Kalos, but with new Pokémon.
In 2017 the next game in the series, Pokémon UltraSun and UltraMoon, was announced and released, introduced new Pokémon without anything else that previously defined a new generation, and the same thing is happening right now with the new game, Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee (to make this even more confusing, some people don't identify this game as a main game, but just as a spinoff instead). I've never seen anyone argue USUM isn't gen 7, despite how much everyone in 2016 insisted that "New Pokémon = New Generation".

It is also worth noting that the closest thing to the concept of a generation being officially confirmed by Game Freak or anyone involved with the marketing of the games, is the Pokémon X and Y Pokédex, that had a different colour for each group of Pokémon, and the term "generation" being vaguely thrown around when advertising some of the games. No official source has ever said that a game belonged to the "third generation" or anything similar to that.
