I don't remember if it's happened in the anime before, but I'd assume the ball just spits out the Pokemon the instant it takes critical damage

Doubt anyone would put their Pokémon in something that kills it if it breaks.
Even so, Pokeballs aren’t fragile at all, since they’re made to be thrown around

It probably just releases the information storing the pokemon, so I'd imagine it wouldn't be much of a big deal. I always figured that in a pokeball, they were digital, like they are in the PC. Worst possible outcome is they become erased, just like data.

I know /vp/ has a throbbing hateboner for Adventures, but if I remember correctly, Lance in the Yellow chapter implies the Pokémon would become trapped in the ball if it breaks, when Yellow attempts to stop him from using his Dragonair by breaking his balls.

It just comes out of the ball, it happened with Snorlax in Orange Islands, the episode revolved around getting Snorlax to the other side of the island to get it's pokeball fixed.

They get converted into energy by the ball, and seals them inside, with the button acting as a lock.
So if under any circumstances the ball is open, the pokemon is released.
