Pokemon's been mainstream since it went global.
It might've fallen out of favor for awhile during Gen 3, but it was still a huge franchise and managed to pick back up in Gen 4.

It fell out of favor before Gen 3, not during, as confirmed by Masuda himself. The supposed "downfall" began during Gen 2.

Gen 3 is what proved that Pokemon WASN'T dying.
