I feel they should just make an old man or a teacher stand in front of the Pokemon School in the first or second city, and ask you if you want to take a class with them. There, you could take classes such as how to catch Pokemon, how does status conditions work, type advantages, PP, and maybe even natures, EVs and combos for "advanced classes". You also get a Teachy TV and maybe a Quick Ball or something as a small reward.
If you say you don't want classes, you are just given the Teachy TV with visual examples and you skip the whole classes tutorial.
