Goldenrod (gym) -> Ecruteak (gym) -> Olivine (Lighthouse which acts like a gym) -> Cianwood (gym) -> Team Rocket mixed with Mahogany (gym) -> Blackthorn (gym). And it's not like you have a lot to explore between these towns. Usually one or two short routes (exceptions being National Park, Lake of Rage and Ice Path).
What about Unova? Castelia (gym) -> Nimbasa (gym) -> Driftveil (gym) -> Mistralton (gym) -> Icirrus (gym) -> Opelucid (gym). Excluding standard routes, you only have 3 caves between all of that (and bridges if you count them).
Routes and different locations are present in all games, even XY. You have one land route and one water route between Shalour and Coumarine. You have that fucking obnoxious desert and Kalos Power Plant between Coumarine and Lumiose. You don't really have much between Lumiose and Laverre but then you have a lot of locations between Laverre and Anistar (Pokeball Factory, Dendemille Town, Lost Hotel and Frost Cavern). And lastly, after you are done with Flare, you have 3 different routes, Terminus Cave, Couriway Town and Pokemon Village to explore before Wulfric.
