As a group they're great and get much more hate than deserve. Most of them are thematically very interesting and many of them took Pokémon from the first 3 gens that either were either complete shitmons competitvely or were not very interesting on their own and made them more viable in battle and more complete as a line, so to speak. Of course some individual evolutions are better than others design-wise and stat-wise but I think cross-gen evolutions are a great thing and it's disappointing Game Freak seems to have retired the concept, although I guess Mega Evolutions and Alolan forms have a complementary purpose.

Cross-gen evos have been fantastic in every other gen but gen 4 designs are all so awful. Their sole purpose was an attempt to strengthen the worst pokedex in pokemon history.

Not that related, but I feel Megas should be scrapped and just make some Pokemon with 2 stages or less have access to a new evolution (Manectric, Houndoom, Mawile) or at least balance their stats and abilities to make them usable without Mega evolution.

GF fucked up on ones like Dusknoir that are worse off than their mid stage with eviolite.
A few should have gotten other types added. Mismagius, IMO, would benefit from being Ghost/Fairy.
Some are fugly like Rhyperior and Magmortar.
Like whatever you want, hate whatever you want. When it comes to the cross gen evos of gen 2 and 4, I think people think nostalgia for the older pokemon means these evolved forms are shit.

For the most part, I don't think any of my opinions regarding the base and evolved form differ that much. The ones I disliked evolved into ones I dislike. The ones I liked evolved into ones I like. The ones I was lukewarm towards evolved into ones I'm lukewarm towards.

tangrowth I used to hate but once I realized it was a sort of caveman version of tangela I warmed up to it
its only cool when you wonder what it looks like under all those vines especially now that it's humanesque
porygon Z I find to be just lazy. porygon was one of the most original ideas from the OG crew and this is the most disappointing final evolution for something with so much creative potantial

I would've wanted limb protrusions like hands or more eyes
I wanted some more digital effects surrounding it like its completely corrupt, maybe even a missingno easter egg

porygon has a lot of potential in general, the whole concept of artificial pokemon designed as products is neat. i kind of like these concept doodles of porygons designed for different computer tasks.

speaking of which I really like the beta with the round lion looking thing, it just brought out the idea that since porygon is digital it could become anything, it has more potential than eevee!

As a big fan of Togepi who was disappointed by how fucking useless Togetic was, Togekiss was everything I wanted in a Pokemon. I'm still not sure why the hell it's a jet-thing, but being able to use it in the games made up for how bizarre the design was.
