>>36655913It's kind of a mixed bag. For one, it includes mons whose functionality is basically that of a normal animal with a lot more intensity/strength, but without the training or technique of fighting-type mons. It also includes mons that are strange "jack of all trades" creatures that can learn elemental moves like flamethrower and thunderbolt because they're just fucking weird. I feel that the origins of this use are drawn from fantasy & folklore types of monsters. Like a goofy/strange Japanese demon or other mythical creature, that's as weird and bewildering as the powers it has. The kind of thing that, when summarized, might end with "oh and it breathes fire and summons lightning, by the way" because it looks less like an evil demon and more like an odd creature/being. Something like that, but less of a powerful spirit and more like a weird animal.
Of course, there are outliers as well, but none are coming to mind right now.
