I kind of just want to see them ditch the Fire > Grass > Water triangle for a game just to see if it can be done without fucking everything up. Dark > Psychic > Fighting can work as long as the Psychic starter gets a broader movepool to get over the Dark counterpart's immunities, etc.

I doubt we'll ever get that, the starter triangle is too iconic to mess with really.

I'd like to see them handle a lion, rhino, and ibex if only to see what they'd do with them Only stipulation is the lion can't be fire cause that's been done to death.

It's cool to adhere to a real life inspiration sometimes, but don't be afraid to make a Pokémon that doesn't quite line up to its real influences. Otherwise we wouldn't have electric mice or psychic bats and stuff.

It comes down to people following patterns for starters. You'll notice people suggest prehistoric or evolution-following suggestions for Grass, Chinese Zodiac suggestions for Fire, and suggestions for Water that are capable of movement on both land and sea.

Having some restriction does help with creativity, tho the only one I'd say is unshakeable is the semi-aquatic water starter. It just doesn't feel right otherwise in my opinion.

I could welcome a Water starter that ends up being part Psychic that doesn't have any actual legs but is capable of moving with its mind over land and through water. I remember seeing that concept mentioned for a Water/Psychic dolphin starter dozens of times.

That'd be a good segue if they ever decide to get ride of the rule, tho considering how everyone and their mom apparently wants a bottlenose dolphin, it being a water/psychic starter seems pretty underwhelming. Personally I'm hoping they pull an Inkey and it being some weird ass typing

Yeah, it doesn't have to be Psychic. They've done things in the past like most famously the Golduck line having psychic powers without the typing. It'd just have some special nature about it but could be another typing. Or if you're saying for it to not be Water too in general, don't see that happening for a starter, but for a non-starter, would make for an interesting dolphin, definitely.

Cyndaquil is classified as the Fire Mouse Pokemon plus its evolutions are basically rats without tails.
Cyndaquil is physically based on the echidna, Quilava is like a stoat or weasel, and Typhlosion is like a badger or wolverine.

The grass list is pretty accurate (except the fucking giant eagle for the owl, its clearly based on the extinct stilt owl)
Minus the rat, fire got decent track record too.

Water is just retarded, when the only pattern is that they're all semi-aquatic. If you could even call that a pattern and not just a no shit sherlock moment.

Venusaur strongly resembles early amphibians and land reptiles in face and body. The plant on its back is also similar to the sails on some of those like Dimetrodon.

Sceptile should be more of a Dilophasaur with the head crest.

Torterra has spikes on its head and along its back played off as a mountain range.
