Sylveon was the posterchild Fairy Type. Beyond that it was a new Eeveelution, and one of Serena's core. But it didn't have nearly as much forced pandering as Jobberfrog did.
Also Blaziken was overshadowed by Sceptile during Gen 3, so take that as you will.

That explains why they pulled off a soft "Greninja" in both the Games (got better Tutor Moves and Hidden Ability than the other two) and the Anime (Ash's Torracat will likely end into an Incineroar but his Rowlet and Lana's Popplio will stay the same, in the Battle Royal episode Incineroar was the last Pokémon standing).

Blaziken was pushed but people latched onto Sceptile for being the cool bipedal reptile that completed the triangle with Charizard and Feraligatr. Even though it was trash in game, but at least had a cool signature move for a grass type. That was one of the cases where the anime helped a lot, since the whole Treecko character arc established him as a badass in the making, whereas Torchic didn't have that much of a personality beyond "May's starter" and "noob" despite decent screentime, and due to her focus in contests the fighting type evolutions didn't get to show any remarkable feats in proper non-Rocket battle, nor to mention losing characterization both times it evolved (especially last one, as the writers at the time couldn't think of a way to give the stiff chicken a personality and saved it for May's departure).

It's a matter of fact that Gen III is the only one with equally large starter fanbases among the three. You have diehard Sceptile fans (who have all the material in the world to boast: anime Treeko, PMD Grovyle, anime Sceptile), Swampert fans (a best friend of mine included, whom he counts as his favorite starter), and Blaziken fans (it's certainly my favorite of the bunch and starter of choice). Every other gen usually has at least one starter left in the historical dust.
