I've been replaying platinum for the first time in years and found a new appreciation for it, for exactly that reason. In every other game it seems like I get overleveled without even trying, but platinum has a nice level curve

I always played my DS games on set and with ten levels below Bosses. On 3DS is not possible to fall that below because, even when playing with exp share off, playing on set requires me to switch a lot and since all pokémon that fight gets 100% exp instead of dividing it now it's impossible to fall below.

Platinum's water gym is the only spike in the game. After that you just breeze through the rest of it.

Yeah, I started playing on Set a few years ago and it's made replays of the earlier games a lot more interesting. Makes you realize just how easy Shift makes battles. Haven't replayed anything past Gen 4 though.

It's only challenging if you don't use healing stuff, then again I did play through platinum recently with battle style set and no healing without much trouble, aside from Lucian

I don't think that's fair difficulty until we get mods that remove use of recovery items during battles for all trainers, player character and NPC alike. THAT would be more true to Pokemon.
