I don't grind and I still use 6 Pokemon. Most Pokemon games you can get away with this. Gen 1 and 2 you can be pretty underleveled and still do well thanks to badge boosts and shitty movesets for opponents. Hoenn and Sinnoh seem to be pretty balanced with level gain besides right before the elite four.

HGSS is really the only game that has a big problem with this.

>Crocanaw
>Scizor
>Bellosom
>Slugma
>Furret
>Togetic
>Yanma
>A Houndoom I transferred over from a complete save and raised also because Slugma has been terrible so far
>A Wobbuffet (Can easily handle opponents above it's level and quickly catch up to the group average
>A Golbat I have around for fly that gets some action now and then

They've all pretty much been kept with a level or two of each other except for Wobbuffet occasionally lagging behind because it's easy for him to take on higher level opponents with that insane HP and then quickly catch up by doing that anyway, and Bellosom who pulled ahead by 4 levels for awhile

My Pokemon are always either a overleveled to the point where they one-shot everything and I would never even consider switching, or underleveled to the point where if I switch into an attack it'll mean losing at least a few members of my team. I don't like having to run back to the center after every other trainer.

all the time put into writing nuzlocke guides and doing nuzlocke runs could have been put into conservative ROMhacks that make the official games more difficult but fair and balanced

Building a competent team during story campaign (as in a team that can reliably switch into hits or strike back fast enough, with appropriate movepool) is a pain in the dick if not outright impossible.
If I want a challenge I'll hit the battle facility or multiplayer.
