Stats are to compliment the design and lore of a Pokémon, but this isn't always the case like with some mega evolutions.

I agree. Save "It just gets better" for normal evolutions. More megas should be more like this. It shifts the megastones to being more strategy-oriented and allowing you to have "seven" pokemon at the expense of a held item.

Sidegrades are good if the pokémon is already decent.
Magcargo clearly doesn't fit in the "well since it's a nice pokémon and its BST are pretty high already let's just give it a different role instead" category
