They did things other than wait in a single room to wait for 10 year old to beat them up and take their money. Mallow helps out with her parents kitchen when she's not hanging out with Lana. Assuming Lana isn't out fishing. Olivia, when she's not acting as Kahuna, runs a jewelry shop and lives with her cats because she can't get a boyfriend. Sophocles fiddles with his toys and gadgets and pops in to help with the festival. And Nanu watches over the group of misfits that nobody else wants. And also acts as professor for his slice of the islands giving out Meowth to little kids who want to start their Island Challenge.
So yeah somebody at the Pokemon company wanted this game to have a far stronger story and characters then the other games did. But they haven't gotten around to learning how to actually tell it in a way that isn't obnoxious.
