What the hell went wrong here? They clearly wanted Dragonite to be more popular than it ended up being.

It's more popular in Japan than the west by a longshot. Same with Goodra. The main point to its design is it's supposed to be deceptively powerful. Looks cute but hits like a truck. But western taste either divides Pokemon into "cute", "badass" or "would fuck" categories. Girls like cute, boys like badass, weebs like waifumon.
Dragonite's unpopularity is why Gamefreak remade it with Salamence. Gen III remains the only one with two pseudos and Salamence is specifically to replace Dragonite.

It’s funny because Salamance ended up being just as relatively unpopular as Dragonite, although it’s overpowered Mega gave it a decent boost recentely.

I like cutemons, coolmons, and waifumons, but Dragonite just looks so dumpy? Frumpy? Not sure how to describe it. It's not cute, not cool, and definitely not waifu at all. I don't hate it but I would never choose to use it for its aesthetics.

Dragonite always seemed to command respect among the people who actually played the games. It got some coolness points for Mystery at the Lighthouse too, but the anime deciding to not acknowledge Lance existed until mid-Johto probably affected Dragonite's overall popularity during the height of Pokemania.

nah megastones needs to be there but are probably in the bag.

GF really really needs to change their item managment. Shit like Disc, arceus plates, mega stones need to be in some sort of extra slot.

Nobody used it in Gen 1. There was no STAB and it took forever to level up, plus you either had to get Game Corner coins or try your luck in the Safari Zone. Most people probably used it in Crystal or HGSS where you get the gift one.
