Which one should I pirate? Also, is it necessary or worthwhile to play SM in addition to USUM?

There's no reason to play both, USUM are basically a third version split into two versions. SM's story is slightly better, but USUM has a few extras like move tutors that make it the better game.

Do yourself a favor and boot up an old favorite or a rom hack or something instead. You'd even be better off playing gen 6
