Genesect is not a modified Kabutops. It's a modified version of one of the species that branched off of it. It's original form is something between Kabutops and Scyther

While Gen 1 had unparalleled designs, most of them either felt lazy or lacked consistency when it came to design choices. I felt that they were figuring out what would be cool over what would be good, as they were unaware that the franchise would end up an immense success.

Dragonite looked pretty menacing in its original sprites, but its whole point is to be more powerful than it looks. That dopey dragon had the highest attack stat in the game.
