Mew also used a similar move in the movie, except white instead of black and far larger. Subsequent media like Smash Bros. had Mewtwo use Shadow Ball since gen2 was already out and the move seemed to fit the bill, but now we have moves exclusive to these Pokemon, one of which was significantly and very deliberately changed in appearance to fit into the 'round energy projectile' category. I don't see what's so difficult to understamd about this, it sure as fuck wasn't planned 20 years ago but here we are.
