The literal only unexpected thing about gen 5's starters is Samurott being a quadruped, it even keeps the exact same sharp weapons theme. You can look at Pignite and Servine and more than easily tell what their evolutions are going to be like

Big lover of Kanto here but I love how this image is saying derisively that every Unova design is a "cartoon", as if Kanto mon aren't also literally cartoons. I mean it's true they actively went for a slightly more Western stylisation for the designs in BW to fit the geographical theming but I don't see why that's so much better or worse than Kanto having its own aesthetic, that being 90s anime esp. Toriyama influenced and dwarfed kaiju. But I do agree that the ambiguity that gen i Pokemon have with their design basises is good

Honestly, I think Rowlet got the short end of the stick, as far as final stage goes.
I mean, Torracat was already mentioned as having strong forelegs, so it evolving into a wrestler is logical, if somewhat awkward.
And Brionne was mentioned as a dancer and stuff, so an idol isn't completely out of the blue.
But Dartrix though. Both it and Rowlet was mentioned to be able to shoot feathers, so why add archery on top of that? Has its wings become so useless that flinging it does nothing?

People would complain about a copy paste. Its stance is pretty much that of an archer. Its just that it's too close to an actual human and the flesh wings genuinely trigger /vp/. It's basically another Braixen/Delphox situation.

The only problems I have with Delphox is its shit model and the fact it doesn’t use a staff. It looks good in the official art but then the games have it looking like a traffic cone because dynamic poses aren’t allowed

So who is the badass bird of Alola? Decidueye is kind of a dork who can't fly but is based on a bird of prey. Toucannon has a big peak and pissed off expression, but eats fruit mostly. And Oricorio's gimmick is being a dancer.
