There's a reason they're much more expressive and lively than before, they're actual fucking characters that you just happen to control.
Pikachu/Eevee's Bond isn't with a soulless representation of the player, it's with an actual character they've had history with before you ever pressed "New Game", much like how Link is his own entity in most Zelda Games even though you can name him, control him and make decisions for him when applicable.
The reason for all of this is because of all the complaints that Lillie stole the player's story and adventure in Gen 7 since your existence there amounted to "Lillie's Battle Bitch" when you weren't going after the League.
Now with LGPE, that problem can't possibly surface again because the story is focused on YOUR character and their starter, which means it's still "your" story and adventure.
