Gen 1's theme is genetics. All of the starters are reptiles genetically spliced with something different. Bulbasaur has a plant growing on it's back, Charmander has a constant flame on it's tail, and Squirtle has an iron shell. When they evolve these features are intensified. With Squirtles iron shell comes with iron water canons.

There are two reasons it has cannons.

1. It's based on a tank. Tanks are slow and armored. So are turtles.
2. Shellfish have tubes that come out of their shells that transfers water. So the canons that come out of its shell are an allusion to that.

Squirtle is my favorite pokemon, and Blastoise is fantastic. I am not a fan of Wartortle, but a lot of people go thru an ugly puberty phase.

Yes they are. You execute the theme by getting the aesthetics right. Oshawott has freckles because they're supposed to be where its whiskers will grow like an actual otter's. Leaving them out makes it completely generic and takes away from the theme. This is how they don't make things look cool for the sake of making them look cool or make things cute for the sake of making it look cute.

This isn't true. Pikachu wouldn't be nearly as popular if it just had had a generic cartoon mouse design.

I know this may come to a shock you anon, but Pokemon are based on multiple things. Bulbasaur being based on a frog doesn't exclude it from being based on a reptile the same way Charmander being based on a liazard doesn't exclude it from being based on a salamander.
